DESCRIPTION: A special State of Emergency: Hip Hop Anti-Violence Town Hall Meeting will address the role of media professionals in the shootings of Obie Trice, Busta Rhymes’ bodyguard and Suge Knight and the repeated violence at urban radio station HOT97 in New York. In addition, we’ll discuss the industry news like the possible death of Death Row Records and what will happen to Tupac’s legacy. We’ll revisit the murders of Biggie Smalls, Tupac and Jam Master Jay and critique Hip Hop magazine covers for traces of media bias.

From video game sex to controversial images of women in music videos and magazines, Hip Hop media violence is off the chain. But is it fair to blame Hip Hop media or should the blame be shifted elsewhere? Hopefully, we’ll find the answers to these issues during our town hall meeting.

A special segment called, “Girl Power: Empowering Women through Hip Hop,” will address issues facing Black women in the hip hop industry. Invited are rapper MC Lyte, Olivia Fox, a urban radio show host in Tampa, FL, rapper/author Sister Souljah, rapper Monie Love, Wendy Williams from the popular radio show, “On the Down Lo with Wendy Williams,” Karrine Steffans, author of Confessions of a Video Vixen, On September 17, we will hold the Girl Power Empowerment Brunch and Fashion Show.

“It’s disturbing that someone can let off six shots in a packed club and can escape without being arrested,” Elliott Wilson told reporters in response to the shooting of Knight in a posh club on Sunday. “The Hip Hop community doesn’t trust the police….and they have done little to make us feel like they [care]….It’s a vicious cycle.”
