Singletons: Better Than That

The Singleton’s Better Than That is a hit with a message for any and everybody that listens.

The upbeat melodies and soulful harmonies will have any listener on their feet clapping and singing along. The songs send out a clear message of worship and praise through rhythm and blues and a neo-soulesque sound. The album proves to be a very dynamic one, ranging from fast and energetic tracks like Dance In The Spirit,” and “Give Him the Praise,” with Kirk Franklin, to slow hymnals like “Nobody Like Him,” “For Me,” “Keep Holdin” On To Me” and “Worthy to Be Praised.”

Born and raised in Lansing, Michigan, the Singletons are an eight member gospel group. Fred Hammond signed the group to his F Hammond Music record label and worked with them on their debut album, Pour Out Your Holy Spirit, which landed in the Gospel Top 40.  This year, the group released its eagerly anticipated follow-up Better Than That, with Hammond again producing and also singing on it.

From the very first track ‘Dance in the Spirit’ to the very last ‘Savior Lord and King,’ the listener will be totally engrossed in the music and the message. The Singleton’s have a choir-like sound reminiscent of Kirk Franklin’s God Property, who is also featured on the CD.

However, there should be no confusion between the two groups; The Singletons are unique in their own right, delivering songs that prove to be the next generation in gospel. Their harmonies are inspirational and they can alternate leads flawlessly. The vocals on this album are strong and the album has a unique funky praise and worship groove.

The arrangements coupled with beautiful vocals and solid message is the recipe for the album’s great listening. It was an enjoyable CD that will have believers and non-believers alike singing its praises.
