Howard University Senior Adds Impressive Journalism Credentials

Washington, DC -- (BlackPressMagazine.com) For aspiring journalist Stacy Anderson, dedication is not only a virtue but a way of life that began early on leading to her present day achievements.

Black Press Magazine interns: Natalie Gilmore (Senior) and Dashira Harris (Junior)Anderson is the recipient of Sigma Delta Chi Foundation Scholarship Award. She was presented with the award at the Society of Professional Journalist annual Dateline Awards for Excellence in Local Journalism dinner at the National Press Club last month in Washington, DC. As her internships and experience were read, Anderson humbly accepted the award.

The Atlanta native began her career writing for Headz Up, a teen magazine for the metro Atlanta region at the tender age of fourteen. She continued writing for the quarterly publication for three years, attaining entertainment editorial position, and there began her journey. Today, Anderson is the business and technology editor of The Hilltop, Howard’s student run newspaper, which was voted the number college newspaper in the United States in 2005. Anderson, who is also on the executive board of Howard’s Association of Black Journalists, is entering into her senior year at Howard University.

Making the rounds

While she has already racked up an extensive list of accomplishments and experiences, Anderson does not limit her journalistic endeavors to the school year. This summer Anderson will split her time between interning at the Wall Street Journal and participating in the student journalism projects at the NABJ annual conference in August.

Black Press Magazine interns: Natalie Gilmore (Senior) and Dashira Harris (Junior)For two summers in a row, Anderson interned at Cable News Network (CNN) while still in high school. She also has interned at the Washington Examiner and WashingtonPost.com as well as participated in the New York Times Summer Institute, which she says was an "intense two weeks and the best experience of my life" because it allowed her to make life-long friends learn while evolving personally and journalistically. One would wonder how she balances a full schedule of classes, being editor, participating in campus organizations, while also interning, but Stacy insists that “the more I do, the more focused I am.”

Landing a job working for a daily newspaper on the east coast and to start a magazine for young minority teens are just a couple of the goals that keep Anderson climbing the journalism ladders. She also wants to go into copy editing after her years of reporting. Anderson will graduate from Howard University in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in print journalism and a minor in business technology.

Dashira A. Harris is an editorial intern for Black Press Magazine's Summer internship program. She is a junior majoring in communications at Temple University. Here are just a few of the articles that the interns have completed:

Howard U. President Under Fire, May be Fired A faculty leader at Howard University is calling for the ouster of President H. Patrick Swygert, (left front) accusing him of putting one of the most prestigious Historically Black Colleges in financial jeopardy. Theodore Brenner, chairman of the faculty senate, wrote to Howard's board of trustees this past week on behalf of the senate's leadership council that it is time to end "an intolerable condition of incompetence and dysfunction at the highest level."

Michael Lewellen: Why I left BET Michael Lewellen, the media's favorite person at Black Entertainment Television, is leaving. The taping of the 1st Annual BET Hip Hop Awards in Atlanta, GA was be his last official event as Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications for the network. Listen to the podcast.

Parallel Worlds: A Black man's perspective on Duke Univ. Exposure of Duke’s covert superior complex in relation to NCCU caused a rift in the community since the victims were students of NCCU, and suspects were members of the very successful Duke Lacrosse Team. As a Black male observer to be exact, I think race will forever be the number factor in rape cases.
