DC's Dish: Insider news and interviews small logo

Chaka, T.I. blur the lines, put hip hop violence on display at BET Awards-related luncheonMayweather and H-Flo are delivering a KO to rap challengers

(BlackPressMagazine.com) - More than a decade ago, police brutality victim Rodney King uttered the words, "Can’t we just get along?"

Warner music executive Kevin Liles probably asked himself the same thing after his June 24 industry luncheon for the BET Awards turned into boxing ring.

At issue: The right to use the title "King of the South."

Hip Hop industry insiders have known for years that rappers TI and Ludacris have been long since lost their love for each other. But since b oth rappers hail from Atlanta, GA the title is more than a fight for street cred and more about a multi-million marketing opportunity.

While Chris Bridges, who raps under the moniker Ludacris, has sold millions of records and made a successful crossover to acting with standout roles "Hustle & Flow" and "Crash," TI experienced his own acting success with the coming of age tale, "ATL."

The event gained more headlines than the BET Awards itself and found its way into the media room at the event. To hear the TI face the music to the press, visit http://www.blackpressradio.com and search keyword: "HIP HOP VIOLENCE."

Ludacris made headlines when he took on TV mogul Oprah Winfrey after she distanced herself from Ludacris and other rappers. Oddly, it was Kevin Liles who joined Russell Simmons in defending the hip hop industry.
