New: "LIVE from New York: Brooklyn Style" Podcast series: (Part One of Six)

Anyone who has seen the shows, "Pimp my ride" and "Cribs," knows that celebrities like to drive fly whips and live in great homes. But where do the nation's hottest stars hang out when they travel?

We wondered the same thing, so over the next six weeks Black Press Magazine Travel Team will take our show on the road for a 12 part, four-city Celebrity Travel podcast series entitled, "Pimp my trip: Travel like a rockstar." The podcasts will take place in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and special mix of the states of Florida/Georgia.

Next up: Brooklyn, New York's ultra hip barbershop "The 'B' Shop."

(BlackPressMagazine.com) - If you listen carefully, you can hear it. The trash talking, fun-loving sounds of Brooklyn's own celebrity barbershop, The "B" Shop where you can find high end grooming and top-flight fashions.

Located next to the Sutter Avenue subway stop on the popular "L" train, The "B" Shop offers everything from authentic designer clothes to the latest shoes and of course, the freshest cuts. Situated in the gritty East New York section of Brooklyn, this is not the place for the faint at heart or anyone who is tenderheaded - or tender hearted for that matter. At the B shop, the conversations can be as sharp as the cuts adminstered by barbers like co-owner and barber Benz or as original as the personal designs of co-owner Joshua who creates some of the most original styles in Brooklyn.

"I don't cut hair, I just cut fashion. I'm a designer and my skills allow us to sell the most authentic clothes around," said Joshua, who goes by the nickname "Yush" pronounced like the word hush. "We're a distinction. You can take advantage of culture, style and grooming, all in one place," he said. "We're all about the culture and lifestyle of hip hop. They can come in and get their cuts and grooming. After that they can come and shop," he said. The "B" Shop sells designer t-shirts, jeans, hats and lots of kicks. Air Max, P.F. Fliers, Nikes, Prada and more. If you're into designer kicks, The "B" Shop is the place for you.

Fakers Beware

Don't be surprised if you can't find your favorite bubblegum pop songs on sale at The "B" Shop. That's because in this barbershop authenticity is the name of the game. You'll only find the best hip hop movies and CDs in the racks behind the counter. Even the mixtape collection was hand selected by the owners to match the discriminating tastes of their longtime customers. While some Black barbershop love to tout their celebrity cliente at The "B" Shop they pride themselves on being a neighborhood hotspot.

"I've been cutting hair for a while, for about ten years. If you've been growing up anywhere near here, you know me. We're the good fellas," said Benz. "I knew I had the skills to do it. I'm an artist and I've always had skills in my hands. I started back in the 90s doing the designs. I picked it up from there and learned the rest," said Benz, who was born and raised in East New York section of Brooklyn. In Brooklyn, fashion is the name of the game.

What else would you expect from the place that gave birth to rap icons Jay Z and the late Notorious B.I.G. as well as boxing champion Zab "Super" Judah? In fact, basketball stand out LeBron James recently caused the NBA free agent coverage to come to a standstill when he mentioned that Brooklyn is his favorite borough in New York City.

From the $600 Mauri shoes to the popular Bamaz t-shirts to the $250 pair of True Religion jeans, most people know to bring their "A" game when they come to Brooklyn.

"This ain't Manhattan," said Joshua. "We got our own thang in Brooklyn. Nobody does like we do it here in the B.K."

Of the many things that Brooklyn does well, pizza comes to mind of those who haven't visited the underrated borough. But anyone who has walked down the streets of Brooklyn knows that it is like attending an urban fashion show for men's fashions. The fellas definately have it on lock in the B.K. They have their own swagger, style and finesse. BEFORE: Our model shows off his scruffy lookAFTER: Benz, co-owner of The B Shop shows off his skills

Ask anyone and they will tell you why every borough is the best, but when it comes to Brooklyn the opinions run deep. To some, Brooklyn is hood, but to others Brooklyn is the epicenter of urban fashion.

From designer styles in their freshly cut hair to the most difficult braid designs known to man, the men of Brooklyn will go to unbelievable lengths to achieve the best looks on the block.

That's why we sought out Brooklyn-based braid designer Alicia White who kindly let us take over her home as she showed us what it takes to keep the men of Brooklyn looking their best. We decided to put White to the test and brought an around the way kid from Brooklynto see if she could transform him into a red carpet ready West Coast stud.

"I've been braiding hair for 13 years, but I never really thought of it as a skill," said White who tightly wove a massive amount of hair into seventeen braids in about two hours.

"This particular style takes a little longer - it took about 2 and a half hours but mainly because of the zig zags. You have to do a lot of parts," she said. "This is nothing. I've been doing this my whole life. I have three sons and all of their hair is like this so for me, this is nothing," said White.
