Editor and Publisher calls Black Press Yearbook a publication that "fills a hole."

How we select the inductees for the Black Press Yearbook directory

If the names read like the who's who in minority media, it's because they are.

Only the most important movers and shakers in the Black media industry are selected for the Black Press Yearbook: Who's Who in Black Media directory.

But, how do we do it?

Selection Process: For each edition, tweleve of the nation's most prestigious Black owned newspaper and magazine publishers, media professionals and journalism executives will be selected for the cover of the Black Press Yearbook: Who's Who in Black Media directory.

We look for leaders in the industry; people who set trends either editorially or socially, or in the business areas of circulation, distribution or advertising sales. In addition, the people who are selected for the cover tend to make news themselves with the articles they write, the reports they broadcast or the media outlets that they own. We are always seeking people who are civic minded and concerned with moving the Black Press as an industry forward.

Verification Process: While no data is complete safe from the changing times, we have a three-prong verification process that ensures that the data is the most current and accurate as possible. That's never been done before in this industry.

Maybe that's why the first edition of directory sold-out of two separate printings. Plus, the next edition of the directory will be expanded by about 75 pages and will include selected detailed publication data and will contain newly added categories including Digital and Interactive, Black publicists, Black authors, College Journalism, Gospel Media and Hip Hop outlets.

The Alternative Black Press

From time-to-time, there will be people listed or selected as inductees who are not apart of the "traditional Black Press." When this occurs, we call it the "alternative Black Press." These are people who are civic minded and concerned about the industry but work for or own non-heritage owned media outlets. We define heritage ownership as media outlets that are at least 51% owned and operated by African Americans.

A good example of people who are always raising the bar in the Alternative Black Press are Tavis Smiley, who's popular radio program doesn't appear on Black owned radio stations but dedicates a significant amount of time to covering African Americans. Others would be Essence magazine, which was co-founded by the late Gordon Parks, but today is 100% owned by Time Warner. Additional examples is Black Entertainment Television, although founded by Robert and Sheila Johnson, is owned by Viacom.
